Floating Your Stress Away

Personal Experience of a Flotation Tank by Belinda Doveston, MD of MetaVarsity

I had the absolute fortune this week to be treated to a flotation therapy session at the Ubuntu Wellness Centre (at the Cape Town Medi-Spa). I would highly recommend that you give it a try as it is a really special experience.

When I arrived I was greated by the friendly Michael who showed me around and explained clearly what was to happen. The peaceful vibe at the Ubuntu Wellness Centre already made me feel relaxed.

You enter a wet room, lock the door behind you and there you see this very curious looking capsule that contains the highly salted and buoyant water. After taking off all your clothes, a quick shower cleans you off and you are ready for the flotation capsule. Inside there are buttons to open and close the lid, to turn on/off the lights, and a panic button in the case of an emergency. As a slightly clausterphobic person I was a bit worried that I would feel trapped in the capsule, yet this was completely not the case.

The session in the flotation tank lasts an hour and I felt disappointed when the music came back gently and the pod opened of its own accord, telling me my session was up. A thorough shower afterwards washes off all the salt and a big glass of water was most welcome. As I later found out it is better if you have no coffee before the float as my detox headache made me aware of how toxins use the first opportuntity to release themselves.

Ian of Ubuntu Wellness Centre informed me that they can put on any CD you want for your float, a wonderful way of detoxing and completely letting go while listening to your favourite meditation CD or even a motivational audio book.

In June 2009 they are also running a special. Normally the float costs R250 per 1 hour session, or R1750 for 10 sessions. In June you can get 3 floats for the price of 2, at R500, if bought during June. What a wonderful gift for yourself and others!

PS: Please note that the photographs provided are not of my bikini body! :-)
